Years in Education: 21 years
Years at MAA: 12
Why I teach: “God made me to live, not just for myself, but to share my gifts with others.'' This directive, embedded in MAA’s Student Mission statement, and ever present in our lives, is also a call to teachers to follow in the footprints of Jesus in His role as teacher. I feel that this is where I am meant to be, helping to educate God’s children according to the precepts learned in my early parochial grammar school education.
In teaching math, I love to share the joy and beauty of math and show how mathematical concepts are inherent in all aspects of our world. Every day can be a happy math day for every student. Social Studies teaches that the past becomes our present and possibly our future. As we explore ancient civilizations, we look for their echoes in today’s world, while projects such as mummification pamphlets, Bloom Ball reviews, and Greek thrones bring these past people to life. Collaboration with Miss Lawhorn, my partner teacher, throughout the year fosters strong class cohesiveness as sixth graders take the lead in many whole school activities: Christmas Story, Mime Crucifixion, Spring play.
